The basics
What is TipBot?
TipBot lets people tip each other on X using XAH or any issued currency on Xahau, just by posting a reply. Everything runs through a hook, a small program living on the Xahau ledger, so there's no company holding your funds in the middle.
Do I need a crypto wallet to send or receive tips?
No. Signing in with X is enough to send tips, receive tips, and see your balance. You only need a Xahau wallet (Xaman) once you want to withdraw funds out of TipBot entirely.
Is there a fee to tip someone?
TipBot itself doesn't charge a fee to move balances around inside the hook. The usual small Xahau network fee applies only to the on-chain transactions you sign yourself, such as a deposit or a withdrawal.
Tip commands
What's the easiest way to tip someone?
Reply to their post with @xahtipbot +5. The tip goes to the author of the post you're replying to. The “Replying to @…” handles X adds to a reply are hidden and never count, so you don't need to type anyone's handle.
How do I tip someone without replying to them?
Put their handle right next to the command, before or after the amount: @alice @xahtipbot +5 or@alice +5 @xahtipbot. If there's no handle next to the command and the post isn't a reply, the first handle you typed gets the tip.
Can I tip several people in one post?
Yes. Give each tip its own handle, amount and bot mention:@alice +1 @xahtipbot @bob +2 @xahtipbot. That's up to 16 tips in one post, each paid separately. If one can't be paid, it's skipped and the rest still go through.
Do I always have to type the issuer for tokens other than XAH?
For most tokens, yes: +5 FOO:rIssuerAddress. Without the issuer, the tip is rejected rather than sent as XAH, because anyone can issue a token called FOO.
The exception is official shortcuts, which work without an issuer: EUR (Euro (Gatehub)), EVR (Evernode), USD (USD (Gatehub)) and XRP (XRP). So+5 EUR is enough. Typing an issuer yourself always wins over the shortcut. The list lives in theTipBot-Shortcutsrepository. Every oracle follows it, and a new shortcut can be set to start at a fixed time so all oracles switch together.
Why was “+1 thanks” rejected?
The word right after the amount is read as the currency. Any word there is taken as an attempt at a currency code, and “thanks” isn't one, so the tip is refused rather than guessed. Keep your words away from that spot:thanks! @alice @xahtipbot +1. Emoji are fine there: +1 🙏 sends XAH.
Which amounts work?
+5, +0.5,+.5 and +0,5all work. +1,000 is rejected because the comma could be a thousands separator, so write+1000. XAH goes to 6 decimal places.
Do retweets or edited posts count?
Retweets never count as a command, whoever posts them. Editing a post can't make it tip twice; the bot treats every version of a post as the same post.
Can I check a post before I send it?
Yes. The playground on theHow to tippage checks a post with the same rules the bot uses and tells you exactly who would get what, or why it would be ignored.
Your tipping balance
Where does my tipping balance come from?
Two places: depositing from Xaman on the dashboard, or receiving a tip from someone else on X. Both land in the same place, your tipping balance, held against your X account.
Why is my balance linked to my X account instead of a wallet?
So you can send and receive tips without ever touching a wallet. It also means the bot can credit you the moment someone tips your @handle, even if you've never signed in before.
I changed my @handle. Did I lose my balance?
No. Your balance is tracked against your numeric X account ID, not your @handle, so renaming your account doesn't strand anything.
Someone tipped me but I've never signed in to TipBot. Where's my money?
It's waiting for you. Tips are credited to your X account ID as soon as they're posted, whether or not you've ever connected. Sign in with X on the dashboard and you'll see it.
The withdraw tweet isn't the real withdrawalInteractive
This trips more people up than anything else, so it gets its own section.
@xahtipbot withdraw 10 XAH to rYourXahauAddress
If that's not a real withdrawal, what does it actually do?
It moves the amount from your tipping balance into a second balance inside the same hook, one that's keyed to a Xahau address instead of an X account. Nothing leaves TipBot. No XAH lands in any wallet. It's bookkeeping, entirely inside the hook, exactly like tipping someone else, just aimed at an address instead of a handle.
Then why does it look like a withdrawal, and why does it exist?
Because the only way to move a balance off your X account and onto a Xahau address, inside TipBot, is to tip that address. The command happens to use the word "withdraw" because that's the balance's purpose, not because posting it pays you out. Think of it as unlocking a balance, not cashing it out.
I posted that tweet. Why don't I see anything in my Xaman wallet?
Because that's expected. The tweet only makes the balance withdrawable. Getting it into your wallet is a separate, real transaction that you sign yourself on the dashboard, covered in the next section.
Can I target someone else's address with this command?
Yes, nothing stops you. Whoever's address you name is who ends up with a withdrawable balance for that amount. Most people target their own address, since that's the point, but the command doesn't check.
For the full command syntax, see How to tip.
Connecting Xaman
What does connecting Xaman on the dashboard actually do?
It proves, for this session, that you control a specific Xahau address. That's what unlocks the withdrawable-balance card and the deposit and withdraw actions next to it. It doesn't move any funds by itself.
Is it safe to connect and disconnect Xaman?
Yes. Connecting only ever asks Xaman to prove you hold an address, the same kind of request you'd approve to sign in anywhere. Disconnecting just clears that from your browser. Neither one moves money, and you can do either as often as you like.
Does connecting Xaman permanently link it to my X account?
No. TipBot remembers the wallet you connected most recently, so sign requests can go straight to your Xaman app instead of needing a QR code every time. Connect a different wallet whenever you want; the newest one simply replaces it. It never gives TipBot any control over the wallet.
Why can't I see my withdrawable balance without connecting a wallet?
That balance is keyed to a Xahau address, not your X account, so TipBot has no way to know which address is yours until you connect one. Once you do, it looks up exactly that address.
Withdrawing for real
Okay, so how do I actually get funds into my wallet?
Three steps: get a tipping balance, move it to your withdrawable balance by tipping your own address on X, then connect Xaman on the dashboard and use the Withdraw action next to your withdrawable balance. That last step is the only one that pays out for real.
Why do I need to sign something in Xaman just to withdraw?
Because that signature is the actual payment instruction. TipBot builds the request, but only you, signing with the address that holds the withdrawable balance, can authorize the hook to release it.
How long does a withdrawal take once I sign it?
It's a normal Xahau transaction, so it settles in the next ledger close, typically a few seconds. The dashboard polls for the result and updates your balances automatically once it's confirmed.
Can I withdraw only part of my withdrawable balance?
Yes. Enter whatever amount you want on the withdraw form, up to what's available for that currency. The rest stays put.
For the full walkthrough, see How to withdraw.
Currencies and trustlines
Can I tip and withdraw any currency?
XAH always works with no setup. Any other issued currency works too, as long as it's named with its issuer, for example USD:rIssuerAddress, or is an official shortcut (EUR (Euro (Gatehub)), EVR (Evernode), USD (USD (Gatehub)) and XRP (XRP)), which needs no issuer. See Tip commands for the details.
What's a trustline, and why does my withdrawal need one?
A trustline is what lets your Xahau address hold a specific issued currency at all; it doesn't apply to XAH. Withdrawing an issued currency pays it out to your wallet, so your wallet needs a trustline to that currency's issuer before the payout can land.
My withdrawal failed with a trustline error. What do I do?
Set up a trustline for that currency and issuer in Xaman, then try the withdrawal again. The error message on the dashboard links directly to a ready-made trustline setup for the currency you were withdrawing.
Troubleshooting
My balance shows zero, or hasn't updated after a tip or deposit.
Give it a minute. Tips and deposits are recorded through the hook and take a short while to be picked up. If it's been a few minutes and still hasn't moved, refresh the dashboard; revisiting the tab also triggers a refresh automatically.
I posted a tip and nothing happened. Did I do it wrong?
Most likely, yes, and that's normal: the bot doesn't reply or confirm anything, it just silently ignores anything it can't parse. Paste your post into the playground in How to tip: it uses the same rules as the bot and tells you exactly what's wrong. Common causes are a missing +, a token without its issuer, or a word right after the amount.
I deleted or edited my tip after posting it. Does that undo it?
No. The command is read once, at the moment it's posted, and acted on immediately. Deleting or editing the post afterwards doesn't claw the funds back, and editing it can't make it tip twice.
Do my deposits still show if I disconnect or switch wallets?
Yes. Deposits belong to your X account, so they show in your Activity whichever wallet you used, or none. Each one shows the address it came from. Withdrawals are listed for the wallet that's currently connected.
Why can't I see older activity?
Activity keeps your 20 most recent entries of each kind: tips received, tips sent, failed tips, deposits, withdrawals and balances made withdrawable. Older entries drop off there, but your balances are always complete; they're held on the ledger, not in the activity list.
I disconnected my Xaman wallet. Did I lose access to anything?
No. Disconnecting only clears the connection in your browser. Your withdrawable balance is still there on the hook, unchanged; reconnect the same address whenever you want to see it again.
Security and custody
Who actually controls my funds while they're in TipBot?
The hook does, an automated program on the Xahau ledger that acts on the same fixed rules for everyone. TipBot's website is the interface you use to talk to it; it never takes custody of your funds outside of that.
Where do my deposited funds actually go?
Your deposits go into the TipBot hook account, rtipboteEEZ6JkTNvcYgUZbiYyrV2W7DQ (Xahau ledger).
That's where the funds sit and where the hook does the accounting. Deposits, tips, and withdrawals are all just the hook updating its state on-chain: crediting one balance and debiting another.
If a balance is accounted for against a particular Xahau address inside the hook, only that address can withdraw it; nobody else can move it out on that address's behalf. This is decentralized because nobody holds a private key to the hook account; control sits in the hook's business logic, not with any person or company.
Is TipBot custodial?
Your tipping and withdrawable balances live inside the hook account until you withdraw, so in that narrow sense the hook is holding them, the same way any smart contract escrow does. Nobody at TipBot can move your balance on your behalf; every deposit and withdrawal requires your own signature in Xaman.
What if X or Xaman is down?
Tips depend on the oracles reading X. If an oracle is offline for a while, it looks back through X for the posts it missed when it restarts, up to a day back by default, so a short outage doesn't lose tips. Your existing balance isn't affected either way; it's held on the ledger, not by the oracles.
